SGN Notification

Published: 12 August 2020

We will shortly be starting safety-critical work to upgrade our gas network in The Mall and Canterbury Road, Faversham. We’ll be replacing our old metal gas mains and services with new plastic pipe.

This project needs to go ahead now, rather than wait until the coronavirus pandemic passes, to ensure you and your neighbours continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply. Our contractor RHP will be carrying out this project on our behalf.

In close consultation with Kent County Council, our project will start on Monday 17 August and last approximately four weeks.

We’ll begin working in The Mall at the junction with Canterbury Road. Traffic flow will be maintained, but we’ll need to employ ‘give and take’ traffic management for everyone’s safety around our site. We’ll also need to suspend some on-street parking and the bus stop at this location, to allow our engineers to dig safely.

From Monday 24 August our engineers will progress onto Canterbury Road and continue to replace our gas pipe between The Mall and A251. Traffic flow will be maintained in both directions for approximately two weeks. However, when we reach the junction with the A251 we’ll need to install temporary multi-way lights around our work area. Motorist will be unable to turn right from A251 onto Canterbury Road, a signed diversion will be in place.

We’ll also need to close Preston Grove for approximately two weeks while we are working at this junction. A signed diversion will be place for motorists via Preston Lane and The Mall.

Our engineers will then progress along Canterbury Road, working between A251 and Faversham Highways Depot. For everyone’s safety two-way temporary traffic lights will remain in place around our work area.

We continue to plan the final phase of our work in consultation with Kent County Council. We’ll be working in Canterbury Road from Faversham Highways Depot to the Selling Road. We’ll provide more details once confirmed.

We’ve worked closely with UK Government and public health bodies to make sure we’re working in line with expert advice during the coronavirus pandemic. We have extra safety precautions in place to protect you and our colleagues from catching or spreading the virus.

Once our engineers start work, they’ll be happy to answer questions at any time during our project. Please remember to keep a safe distance when speaking to our team or passing our site.

We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, local residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation, if you have any questions please let me know.

Kind regards
